Trying to factor by splitting the middle term

 4.1     Factoring  49t²+70t-9000 

The first term is,  49t²  its coefficient is  49 .
The middle term is,  +70t  its coefficient is  70 .
The last term, "the constant", is  -9000 

Step-1 : Multiply the coefficient of the first term by the constant   49 • -9000 = -441000 

Step-2 : Find two factors of  -441000  whose sum equals the coefficient of the middle term, which is   70 .

Step-3 : Rewrite the polynomial splitting the middle term using the two factors found in step 2 above,  -630  and  700 
                     49t² - 630t + 700t - 9000

Step-4 : Add up the first 2 terms, pulling out like factors :

Where a fraction equals zero, its numerator, the part which is above the fraction line, must equal zero.

Now,to get rid of the denominator, Tiger multiplys both sides of the equation by the denominator.

Here's how:

  (7t-90)•(7t+100)

Now, on the left hand side, the  10  cancels out the denominator, while, on the right hand side, zero times anything is still zero.

The equation now takes the shape :

Theory - Roots of a product :

 5.2    A product of several terms equals zero. 

 When a product of two or more terms equals zero, then at least one of the terms must be zero. 

 We shall now solve each term = 0 separately 

 In other words, we are going to solve as many equations as there are terms in the product 

 Any solution of term = 0 solves product = 0 as well.

Solving a Single Variable Equation :

 5.3      Solve  :    7t-90 = 0 

 Add  90  to both sides of the equation : 
                      7t = 90
Divide both sides of the equation by 7:
                     t = 90/7 = 12.857

Solving a Single Variable Equation :

 5.4      Solve  :    7t+100 = 0 

 Subtract  100  from both sides of the equation : 
                      7t = -100
Divide both sides of the equation by 7:
                     t = -100/7 = -14.286

Parabola, Finding the Vertex :

 6.1      Find the Vertex of   y = 49t²+70t-9000

Parabolas have a highest or a lowest point called the Vertex .   Our parabola opens up and accordingly has a lowest point (AKA absolute minimum) .   We know this even before plotting  "y"  because the coefficient of the first term, 49 , is positive (greater than zero). 

 Each parabola has a vertical line of symmetry that passes through its vertex. Because of this symmetry, the line of symmetry would, for example, pass through the midpoint of the two  x -intercepts (roots or solutions) of the parabola. That is, if the parabola has indeed two real solutions. 

 Parabolas can model many real life situations, such as the height above ground, of an object thrown upward, after some period of time. The vertex of the parabola can provide us with information, such as the maximum height that object, thrown upwards, can reach. For this reason we want to be able to find the coordinates of the vertex. 

 For any parabola,At²+Bt+C,the  t -coordinate of the vertex is given by  -B/(2A) . In our case the  t  coordinate is  -0.7143  

 Plugging into the parabola formula  -0.7143  for  t  we can calculate the  y -coordinate : 
  y = 49.0 * -0.71 * -0.71 + 70.0 * -0.71 - 9000.0
or   y = -9025.000

Solve Quadratic Equation by Completing The Square

 6.2     Solving   49t²+70t-9000 = 0 by Completing The Square .

 Divide both sides of the equation by  49  to have 1 as the coefficient of the first term :
   t²+(10/7)t-(9000/49) = 0

Add  9000/49  to both side of the equation :
   t²+(10/7)t = 9000/49

Now the clever bit: Take the coefficient of  t , which is  10/7 , divide by two, giving  5/7 , and finally square it giving  25/49 

Add  25/49  to both sides of the equation :
  On the right hand side we have :
   9000/49  +  25/49   The common denominator of the two fractions is  49   Adding  (9000/49)+(25/49)  gives  9025/49 
  So adding to both sides we finally get :
   t²+(10/7)t+(25/49) = 9025/49

Adding  25/49  has completed the left hand side into a perfect square :
   t²+(10/7)t+(25/49)  =
   (t+(5/7)) • (t+(5/7))  =
  (t+(5/7))²
Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another. Since
   t²+(10/7)t+(25/49) = 9025/49 and
   t²+(10/7)t+(25/49) = (t+(5/7))²
then, according to the law of transitivity,
   (t+(5/7))² = 9025/49

We'll refer to this Equation as  Eq. #6.2.1  

The Square Root Principle says that When two things are equal, their square roots are equal.

Note that the square root of
   (t+(5/7))²   is
   (t+(5/7))^2/2 =
  (t+(5/7))¹ =
   t+(5/7)

Now, applying the Square Root Principle to  Eq. #6.2.1  we get:
   t+(5/7) = √ 9025/49

Subtract  5/7  from both sides to obtain:
   t = -5/7 + √ 9025/49

Since a square root has two values, one positive and the other negative
   t² + (10/7)t - (9000/49) = 0
   has two solutions:
  t = -5/7 + √ 9025/49
   or
  t = -5/7 - √ 9025/49

Note that  √ 9025/49 can be written as
  √ 9025  / √ 49   which is 95 / 7

Solve Quadratic Equation using the Quadratic Formula

 6.3     Solving    49t²+70t-9000 = 0 by the Quadratic Formula .

 According to the Quadratic Formula,  t  , the solution for   At²+Bt+C  = 0  , where  A, B  and  C  are numbers, often called coefficients, is given by :

  In our case,  A   =     49
                      B   =    70
                      C   =  -9000

Accordingly,  B²  -  4AC   =

Applying the quadratic formula :

               -70 ± √ 1768900

Can  √ 1768900 be simplified ?

Yes!   The prime factorization of  1768900   is
   2•2•5•5•7•7•19•19 
To be able to remove something from under the radical, there have to be  2  instances of it (because we are taking a square i.e. second root).

√ 1768900   =  √ 2•2•5•5•7•7•19•19   =2•5•7•19•√ 1   =
                ±  1330 • √ 1   =
                ±  1330

So now we are looking at:
           t  =  ( -70 ± 1330) / 98

Two real solutions:

t =(-70+√1768900)/98=(-5+95)/7= 12.857

or:

t =(-70-√1768900)/98=(-5-95)/7= -14.286

Two solutions were found :

1.  t = -100/7 = -14.286
   
2.  t = 90/7 = 12.857
