Parabola, Finding the Vertex :

 6.2      Find the Vertex of   y = 49x²-50x-980

Parabolas have a highest or a lowest point called the Vertex .   Our parabola opens up and accordingly has a lowest point (AKA absolute minimum) .   We know this even before plotting  "y"  because the coefficient of the first term, 49 , is positive (greater than zero). 

 Each parabola has a vertical line of symmetry that passes through its vertex. Because of this symmetry, the line of symmetry would, for example, pass through the midpoint of the two  x -intercepts (roots or solutions) of the parabola. That is, if the parabola has indeed two real solutions.

  y = 49.0 * 0.51 * 0.51 - 50.0 * 0.51 - 980.0
or   y = -992.755

Solve Quadratic Equation by Completing The Square

 6.3     Solving   49x²-50x-980 = 0 by Completing The Square .

 Divide both sides of the equation by  49  to have 1 as the coefficient of the first term :
   x²-(50/49)x-20 = 0

Add  20  to both side of the equation :
   x²-(50/49)x = 20

Now the clever bit: Take the coefficient of  x , which is  50/49 , divide by two, giving  25/49 , and finally square it giving  625/2401 

Add  625/2401  to both sides of the equation :
  On the right hand side we have :
   20  +  625/2401    or,  (20/1)+(625/2401) 
  The common denominator of the two fractions is  2401   Adding  (48020/2401)+(625/2401)  gives  48645/2401 
  So adding to both sides we finally get :
   x²-(50/49)x+(625/2401) = 48645/2401

Things which are equal to the same thing are also equal to one another. Since
   x²-(50/49)x+(625/2401) = 48645/2401 and
   x²-(50/49)x+(625/2401) = (x-(25/49))²
then, according to the law of transitivity,
   (x-(25/49))² = 48645/2401

The Square Root Principle says that When two things are equal, their square roots are equal.

   has two solutions:

Solve Quadratic Equation using the Quadratic Formula

Can  √ 194580 be simplified ?

Yes!   The prime factorization of  194580   is
   2•2•3•3•5•23•47 
To be able to remove something from under the radical, there have to be  2  instances of it (because we are taking a square i.e. second root).

√ 194580   =  √ 2•2•3•3•5•23•47   =2•3•√ 5405   =
                ±  6 • √ 5405

  √ 5405   , rounded to 4 decimal digits, is  73.5187
 So now we are looking at:
           x  =  ( 50 ± 6 •  73.519 ) / 98
